Google and YouTube have just settled a $30 million class action lawsuit, while also refusing to admit to any wrongdoing. And you could be eligible for a cut of that $30 million.
To be eligible, you need to have been watching YouTube videos while under the age of 13, between July 1, 2013, and April 1, 2020. Now, the interesting part is, how would anyone prove this, to get a cut of that class action lawsuit?
This stems from the Hubbard v Google case that was just settled. The plaintiffs say that children who watched cartoons or other kids-oriented content on YouTube had their data collected for the company’s advertising business, in violation of privacy laws.
Earlier in the year, a judge had ruled that Google knowingly “engaged in highly offensive conduct” in collecting the data of users under the age of 13. This case has taken quite some time to make its way through the courts, with the case originally being filed back in 2019.
How to submit your claim
As with any class action lawsuit, you can submit your claim to get a check from Google/YouTube, and here’s how you do that.
Go to YouTubePrivacySettlement.com, and file your claim. Keep in mind that you have to be under 13 years of age between the years listed above, to be eligible.
You do need to submit your claim by January 21, 2026, to be eligible.
Keep in mind that this is a pretty small settlement, so after attorneys’ fees are paid for, you might only get a few bucks. But hey, it only takes a few minutes to fill out the form. They are not saying how much each person will get, just yet.
The website specifies that the amount will be disbursed evenly after attorneys’ fees, costs and expenses, notice and administration costs, and taxes are paid.
