Multiple New Jersey polling locations were moved due to threats on Tuesday, according to state officials.
New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin (D) said in a press release that early Tuesday morning, polling places in Bergen, Essex, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean and Passaic counties received threats via email.
Platkin added that law enforcement officers responded at each polling locations, with some already reopened to the public. Voters at other locations will be redirected to another polling place nearby.
“Voters should continue to have confidence that they can cast their ballot without fear of intimidation, and we will continue to work tirelessly to ensure a free, fair, and secure election,” Platkin said. “Make no mistake: We will not tolerate any attempts to interfere with our elections, and we will swiftly hold accountable anyone who seeks to interfere with the safety or security of our electoral process.”
The Hill has reached out to Platkin’s office for clarification on which polling places have reopened.
Voters in the Garden State are choosing their next governor on Tuesday, with Democrat Mikie Sherrill facing off against Republican Jack Ciattarelli.
New Jersey’s lieutenant governor and secretary of state, Tahesha Way, said on the social platform X Tuesday that her office is “aware” of the threats and is “doing everything in our power to protect voters and poll workers and coordinate closely with state, local and federal partners to ensure a smooth and safe election.”
Way also encouraged “every eligible voter to exercise their right to vote” before polls close at 8 p.m. EST.
Last month, the Department of Justice said it will send monitors to polling places in Passaic County ahead of the election.
Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic mayoral nominee for New York City, told reporters Tuesday that the threats are “incredibly concerning” and “an illustration of the attacks we’re seeing on our democracy.”
Mamdani went on to criticize the Trump administration for “trying to intimidate voters with baseless allegations of voters fraud as a means of trying to repress the voice of Americans across this country.”
