. . . to speak evil of no one, to avoid quarreling, to be gentle, and to show perfect courtesy toward all people.
In John 13:34-35, Jesus commanded us, as believers, to love one another. And that love was to be the distinguishing mark of Jesus’ followers. The world will know that we are His because we love one another.
But it seems we often forget, or ignore, this command that Jesus gave. We might love those who are like us and believe like we do. But how often are we less than loving toward those whose opinions or beliefs are not in line with our own? How often are our words to them, or about them, harsh and unloving?
There are real differences across the different traditions within Christianity in what we believe and how we practice our faith. And there can be real benefit to discussing these differences. Constructive dialogue can help us to grow and develop in our faith and understanding.
But as we discuss our differences, it is important to never lose sight of Jesus’ command that we love one another. And Titus 3:2 gives us some good guidelines on how to lovingly share with those with whom we disagree.
Communication Guidelines
These guidelines are given to believers. Do not speak evil of other believers. Do not quarrel. Be gentle. And be courteous in your words and actions. Even if the person you are talking with is less than respectful in their words, let your words be loving and kind. Don’t be drawn into trading insults.
We need to think before we speak. Am I being judgmental? Are my words loving? Are they constructive and helpful? How would I feel if they were directed toward me? If your words are not loving and constructive, or if you would be offended if they were directed at you, then you should reconsider what you have to say.
Speak evil of no one. Avoid quarreling. Be gentle. And show perfect courtesy toward all people. Especially toward other believers. Let all of your communication with others be respectful
