Motorola is a popular name in the foldable space thanks to its Razr line of models. Unlike Samsung, the company only offers clamshell-style foldables, with minor design differences between the base and top-end variants. However, it seems we may soon see some notable design changes. A new Motorola foldable phone’s design patent has now surfaced online, showing a departure from the present horizontal camera sensor placement.
Motorola files a new foldable phone design patent
Folks at Xpertpick have spotted a new Motorola design patent on the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) platform. And, while the listing doesn’t specify the technical details of the foldables, it gives away the company’s possible design ambitions for its next foldables. It’s still clamshell-style, closely matching the current Razr lineup.Â
The patent listing shows the exterior design of the Motorola phone from multiple angles, with the front and back designs grabbing the attention.
The images reveal that the foldable has a triple camera setup arranged vertically. These are positioned towards one edge of the rear panel. The current Razr foldables house dual cameras (horizontally) within the secondary screen on the back. If the design pans out, this will be a major upgrade. But then, you may have to compromise a portion of the secondary screen.
There’s a new circular cover on the back
There appears to be a circular cover on the back panel, whose use cases or description are not available currently. For comparison, the Motorola Razr Ultra 2025 features a square cover display with slim bezels. The images give a feeling that Motorola is refining the foldable design while retaining the signature style and form factor.
Given that Razr is Motorola’s premium category, it’s unlikely that it would bring such a drastic change. The new design may sit alongside the current Razr lineup as an alternative.
Having said that, patents don’t necessarily turn into a production-ready device. Companies usually file multiple design patents, but only a few reach the market eventually. Motorola usually launches its new Razr foldables globally around April every year.
