We’ve all seen the culturally impactful video clip of a pencil floating within a spaceship from Stanley Kubrick’s seminal film 2001: A Space Odyssey, dramatically scored to Austrian composer Johann Strauss II’s The Blue Danube Waltz. The seemingly mundane device takes on grander attribution as it signifies a different place in time and place. Embodying that same sense of awe and novelty, the Novium Hoverpen Interstellar turns the seemingly tangible fantasy real and with technology that isn’t particularly nascent.
Crafted using aerospace-grade aluminum for a truly streamlined form and tactile condition, the device tilts at a precise 23.5° angle. A semi-enclosed ring pedestal, rendered in the same material but with just the right amount of magnetic repulsion, holds the utensil in a perfectly aligned state of suspension.
Like the famous scene from Kubrick’s masterpiece, this usually overlooked and often overly accumulated item becomes a more explicit statement piece adorning one’s desk. The suddenly valued device inspires a more thoughtful and considered level of use; how one jots down a to-do list, signs a check, takes the time to journal, or perhaps even sketches out a concept that transcends earthly limitations.
As an interactive kinetic sculpture in and of itself, the Novium Hoverpen Interstellar glides in flawless motion for up to 20 seconds with just the gentle twist of its tip. Surprisingly, this also serves a function, a psychological one at that. The repetitive movement allows one to relax for a moment and relieve stress by re-grounding themselves in the present.
This subsequently leads to a renewed sense of focus and intentional action. It’s become more and more substantiated that periodic breaks – moments that allow us to pull away from the task at hand and daydream – are essential to our mental well-being and productivity.
All of this is achieved with ergonomics also in mind. The comfort of touch – adaptable to the widely varying proportions of the human body – is accommodated through the pen’s seamlessly twisted shell form. This composition makes for the perfect grip. Though near weightless, the uni-body apparatus is especially durable and engineered for extensive daily use.
Both ancient and futuristic, just like the cosmos, each Novium Hoverpen Interstellar cradles an authentic Muonionalusta Meteorite, a fragment of rock born 4.56 billion years ago – the dawn of our solar system – precision inlaid within its monolithic structure.
Fitted out with stainless steel or an opulent 18K gold nib, the Hoverpen Future iteration anchors at an impressive 60-degree angle and twists for 30 seconds when activated. It comes in both rollerball and fountain pen variants. Both feature German-engineered Schmidt components, elements that are found in most of the world’s ultra-premium fountain pens.
