On a beautiful autumn weekend, the best mountain bike racers in the world descended upon Lake Placid, NY, for three epic days of racing. The UCI Mountain Bike World Cup was back to crown champions and inspire the next generation of cyclists. We sent our new writer, Charlie Brown to take in the sites, sounds and smells of race day. Here’s her take on the event and her first piece for Momtrends:
For the second year running, historic Lake Placid welcomed the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup, transforming the Adirondack region into a hub of high-energy action and family-friendly fun. This year, the event expanded its footprint—bringing downhill competitions to Whiteface Mountain while continuing cross-country races at Mt. Van Hoevenberg. With accessible ticket pricing (just $20 for adults and even less for kids), the World Cup offers an exciting and affordable outing for both seasoned cycling fans and families looking for an unforgettable day outdoors.
The venue buzzed with energy—screaming fans cheered on their favorite racers as the sounds of the event echoed across the course. Over an action-packed three days, the WHOOP UCI Mountain Bike World Series drew 17,400 total attendance, including credentialed UCI WBD partners, media, broadcast teams, workforce, and volunteers, with more than 8,100 on-site at Whiteface Mountain on Saturday alone. Beyond the roar of the crowd, there was the revving of chainsaws, the whoosh of tires hitting berms at top speed, and the high-pitched whine of riders sprinting on bike rollers in the start-finish straight. The action was just as intense to watch, with racers careening down the Red Bull-sponsored downhill section. A massive dust cloud rose after the first lap, engulfing the lead pack.
As you enter the venue, the aroma of brick oven pizza and savory comfort food fills the air. A sea of tents unfolds along the race course, packed with vendors, gear, and event merchandise. Let’s dive into the day.

Fun for all ages:
The World Cup isn’t just for die-hard mountain biking fans—even newbies to the sport will have a blast. From face painting and carnival performers to prize-winning games and a kids’ ride with pro racers, the event blends high-energy sport with family-friendly entertainment. Young riders have the chance to pedal alongside their heroes on a short course, collecting high-fives and memories that last far longer than any souvenir. Older kids can stand just feet from the action, both on and off the course, while gear enthusiasts geek out over the latest bike technology on display.
There’s truly something for everyone. One parking lot is dedicated entirely to vendors and food, with everything from bike parts to Subaru showcases. And if mountain biking isn’t quite your thing, downtown Lake Placid offers plenty to explore between races—from Olympic Museum tours and Main Street boutiques to candy shops and casual, family-friendly restaurants.
Being in the Outdoors:
In our screen-saturated world, the Mountain Bike World Cup offers a rare opportunity for families to truly unplug. With limited cell service in Lake Placid, the experience naturally draws you into the moment—grounded in the race and immersed in nature. The venue is nestled in the heart of the Adirondacks, surrounded by stunning early October foliage. Whether you’re near the start or finish line, or hiking up along the course, you won’t see spectators glued to their screens. Instead, phones come out only to capture the action—snapping photos and filming videos of the all-star racers in motion.

Bonding opportunity:
For many families, sports are a way to bond—especially for parents who introduced their kids to the sport in the first place. For me, this event felt especially personal. My dad was the one who first got me into mountain biking, and while he couldn’t attend in person, sharing the experience with him virtually was the next best thing. We exchanged photos and videos, and even had a quick FaceTime so he could feel the energy of the race in real time.
As mountain biking continues to move into the mainstream, events like this are key to the sport’s growth—not only by showcasing top-tier talent, but also by inspiring the next generation of riders. While it hasn’t yet reached the popularity of the NBA or NFL, mountain biking offers something those sports can’t: up-close access to world-class athletes in a family-friendly, outdoor setting.
Plan Your Visit:
If you want to come next year, there are some things you will need to know.
- Factor in shuttle time: There is no parking at the venue, so there are buses that shuttle spectators to and from the venue.
- Bring snacks: You can bring your own water and food if you want to save a bit. There’s also food for purchase.
- Layer up! Bring extra clothes because depending on when you show up, it is cool in the morning, then warmer as the sun moves in late morning into the afternoon.
- Check the times of the events. Most people come in the afternoon to watch the elite racers for both men and women.

Final Thoughts
Christopher Blevins, winner of the men’s elite races and overall World Cup champion, used both of his post-race interviews to deliver an inspiring message: “Get out on your bikes and enjoy the world around us.” Standing atop the podium, he encouraged young riders—both literally and at heart—proving that even at the sport’s highest level, mountain biking remains accessible and welcoming to all.
