In the early 1960s, motorsport bosses over at Porsche were looking for an answer. They’d been very competitive with the 356 Carrera GT in endurance racing, but they also knew that rivals were coming on strong, with their lighter and more aerodynamic machinery. So, Porsche needed to get its act together and find something more slippery, so they could get extra speed out of their proven 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine.
