We’re expected to see further improvements in smartphone battery tech in 2026, as single-cell battery capacity is expected to hit 9,000mAh. Despite that, those batteries will not be bulky.
Silicon-carbon batteries marked a significant step forward, and many companies use them these days. Samsung, Apple, and Google are still an exception, but many Chinese smartphone OEMs have been successfully using them for a while now.
Even bigger phone batteries on the way, without adding bulk to devices
Those batteries are basically as thin as lithium ones, but pack more energy on the inside, and thus provide higher battery capacities. Silicon-carbon batteries these days contain around 10% of silicon. That’s what allowed various companies to include 6,000+mAh and even 7,000+mAh batteries in their phones without making them thicker. Those companies include OPPO, Xiaomi, OnePlus, HONOR, and more.
With that being said, a well-known tipster, Digital Chat Station, claims that we’ll see a further improvement soon. OPPO has been testing a 15% silicon 8,000mAh battery for around six months.
He also added that Chinese smartphone OEMs are already testing even bigger battery capacities. OPPO and HONOR are seemingly testing batteries with an increased amount of silicon, too, increased by 25-30%.
Next-gen smartphones are expected to increase use of silicon quite a bit
Next-gen smartphones could include silicon-carbon batteries that ship with 20% of silicon on the inside. That would allow companies to provide even higher battery capacities without making them physically bigger.
By next year, single-cell battery capacities are expected to reach 8,500mAh. Preliminary research is also underway for 9,000mAh batteries. It could take 6-12 months to make sure such batteries are reliable, though, so don’t expect to see them before the H2 next year.
The fun doesn’t stop there. ‘Metal-shell’ batteries have also been mentioned. That’s a new battery type that smartphone OEMs could adopt beginning next year. They offer superior volume efficiency, which could also increase capacity in the same physical space.
