The 2026 Toyota bZ in a Nutshell
The EV crossover formerly known as the bZ4X, Toyota finally simplified its name to bZ for the 2026 model year. Mind you, it’s still called bZ4X in most parts of the world, but we’re happy the old tongue-twister of a name has been replaced with a more straightforward one for the US market, nonetheless.
Unveiled at the 2021 Los Angeles Auto Show, the bZ is the first model under Toyota’s Beyond Zero initiative. It was the start of a line of electric vehicles of various classes to cater to select markets. The 2026 bZ not only brings a simpler name but also a slew of major mechanical updates and upgrades for better performance and range. Oh, and the exterior and interior benefited from a few tweaks as well.
The bZ is the twin of the Subaru Solterra, and both ride on Toyota’s e-TNGA platform. Toyota took care of the powertrain, while Subaru is credited with the all-wheel drive system and advanced driver-assist features. Two trim levels are available, along with two powertrain options.

2026 Toyota bZ Highlights
As mentioned, there are three trim levels to choose from with the 2026 bZ. The XLE serves as the entry point into ownership, while the XLE Plus offers additional equipment and a larger battery. But for those who want a little bit more, there’s the top-spec Limited. Both are available with either two-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, with the latter gaining a second electric motor and more power.
The single-motor version produces 221 hp and 198 lb-ft of torque, with propulsion directed to the front wheels. Meanwhile, the dual-motor all-wheel drive models produce 338 hp, with the front motor generating 198 lb-ft and the rear motor producing 125 lb-ft. All but the base bZ use a 74.7kWh battery pack with range varying from 278 miles (Limited AWD) to 314 miles (XLE Plus 2WD). The standard XLE makes do with a 57.7kWh pack with a range of up to 236 miles
While the XLE is already comprehensively equipped, the Limited adds several niceties to tempt more folks into getting the higher trim. Some additions include a larger 14-inch infotainment screen, panoramic sunroof, digital rearview mirror, advanced parking assist, panoramic view monitor, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, to name a few. A nine-speaker JBL Premium Audio system is available.

Final Thoughts
There’s no doubt that going for a Toyota is a safe bet. One can even say that the mantra applies worldwide. For those dipping their toes into the EV market, leasing a bZ is a good way to know if it suits their needs and lifestyle. The 2026 model also addresses the shortcomings of the bZ4X by offering improved range, an enhanced equipment list, and enhanced performance.
It may not be the most exciting choice, but as a means of getting around, the bZ does the job well enough that it might sway some people to opt for a full electric vehicle for their next purchase.
