1966 Jeep Super Wagoneer Restomod Packs a 485-HP Hemi V8

Jeep’s Super Wagoneer from the 1960s was among the earliest luxury SUVs the world ever saw. Much like the Range Rover that came after it, it combined serious off-road ability with an opulent cabin and ride. Today, the Super Wagoneer name itself is no longer part of the lineup, with the brand focusing on models like the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer, as well as the tried-and-tested Wrangler instead. However, restomod specialist Vigilante 4×4 has resurrected a 1966 Super Wagoneer and transformed it into something far more modern to drive while keeping the character that made it special.

Reimagining One of the First Luxury SUVs

Introduced in 1966, the Super Wagoneer helped define the idea of a premium SUV long before the segment exploded into what it is today, with everyone and their mother having a contender. Vigilante’s team kept the familiar, boxy shape, chrome accents, and vintage design cues while restoring the body and finishing it in Empire Blue. One of the few visual hints that this example is far from stock comes from the beefy BFGoodrich tires, which give it a taller, tougher stance than the original. While some Jeep restomods go against what the original car stood for, the Vigilante team retained its original character while adding some needed upgrades without going over the top.

Modern Muscle Beneath a Classic Body

Vigilante ditched the original 270-hp AMC V8 and replaced it with a third-generation 6.4-liter HEMI V8 that produces 485 hp – the same motor found in the new Jeep Wrangler Willys 392. The old three-speed automatic also made way for a Tremec six-speed manual transmission, adding a more driver-focused feel to the experience. Alongside the new powertrain, the hand-built suspension system, upgraded Baer brakes, and a modernized four-wheel-drive setup were added to handle the extra performance. Vigilante is not a stranger to reworking classic Jeeps either. The company has even explored electrification before, by converting an old Jeep Wagoneer into a full-blown EV.

An Old Cabin With Hidden Technology

Inside, the approach mirrors the exterior philosophy. Much of the cabin remains period correct with details like a push-button radio, bench seating, and analog dials that preserve the vintage atmosphere. But beneath the surface are modern conveniences such as Bluetooth connectivity and a fully functional HVAC system. Founder Daniel van Doveren summed it up well, explaining that the goal was to “deliver an entirely new driving experience” without committing sacrilege. That’s exactly what they did.
