Forgot square selfie cameras, some smartphone cameras are now working on 100-megapixel selfie cameras.
This latest news comes from leaker Digital Chat Station over on Weibo, who has said that some manufacturers have tested three 100MP lenses. And that’s in addition to the 200MP main and 200MP telephoto cameras on these devices. Meaning these phones are going to be dealing with a whole lot of resolution.
Now, because it is a front-facing camera, these are going to be small pixel sensors, which means that 100-megapixel resolution won’t be as good as your rear cameras, still. While Digital Chat Station did not mention specific brands here, it’s quite obvious that these are likely Huawei and OPPO working on this.
Those two brands are also working on 1:1 square front-facing cameras for their future flagships, after Apple added it to the iPhone 17 last year. Huawei is slated to use it in its upcoming Nova 16 series, and the Find X10 series from OPPO will also use it. And if it’s successful, we could see more Android phones adopt this new sensor.
Is a 100MP selfie camera really necessary?
A 100-megapixel selfie camera is likely not necessary, but if you are one who takes a lot of selfies or records vlogs with your smartphone, then this is going to be a really good upgrade for you. Though right now, we don’t know how much better the quality will be.
Keep in mind that this is still going to be a small sensor, so the extra resolution can really only do so much when it comes to quality.
Then again, if you’re like me, then the 32MP and 50MP cameras we already have in displays are more than enough. I mostly use that front-facing camera for facial recognition and the occasional selfie. And that’s where the 1:1 square sensor comes in handy because you can record in landscape while holding your phone in portrait.
