House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) will give remarks as the record government shutdown stretches into its 37th day.
Democrats, despite the lapse in funding, are celebrating Tuesday’s sweeping election victories as a signal that voters may be turning on President Trump and Republicans ahead of next year’s midterms. They have also renewed their confidence, as the party presses the GOP for health care concessions as part of a deal to reopen the government.
Jeffries and Sen. Minority Leader (D-N.Y.) have also asked Trump and their Republican colleagues for a meeting as the impasse persists following 14 failed votes in the Senate.
The press conference also comes after former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) announced she would retire at the end of the term. Jeffries, in a statement, called Pelosi an “iconic, heroic, trailblazing, legendary and transformational leader” and “the greatest Speaker of all time.”
The event is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. EST.
