Late night host Seth Meyers responded Monday to President Trump’s attacks on jokes the comedian told last week about Trump’s criticism of the way aircraft carriers are built.
Trump, in a Truth Social post, called Meyers “deranged” and “untalented” expressing anger that the comedian ranted “endlessly” about his comments on aircraft carriers.
Meyers, during his first show on NBC this week, responded to the president by saying “in general, I try to live by the New Yorker’s creed. When someone is ranting and raving about you, ignore them. Chances are they’re just going to move on and rant about something else.”
“But there is one thing that I simply have to address,” the host continued. “You can say I’m untalented. You can say I’m deranged … But I’m not the one who talks endlessly about catapults on aircraft carriers!”
He added, “You’re the one who talks endlessly who talks endlessly about catapults on aircraft carriers.”
Meyers is the latest in a slew of late-night hosts that Trump and his allies have criticized, while his administration turns up the heat on major broadcast networks over their news coverage, much of which the president argues is unfairly critical of him.
He also poked fun last month at the president’s hopes of winning a Nobel Peace Prize.
The comedian has joined other late-night hosts in recent weeks to stand up for fellow comics who have faced cancellation.
After CBS announced “The Late Show” would end next May, Meyers denounced the settlement between Paramount — CBS’s parent company — and the Trump administration, while speaking on behalf of host Stephen Colbert. He also defended ABC host Jimmy Kimmel after he was briefly suspended over comments he made following the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
