Turns out, the Samsung Galaxy Ring could be a potential controller for the Galaxy XR and other Android XR devices in the future.
Galaxy Ring could double as an Android XR controller
According to a report from Android Authority, they did an APK teardown of the Galaxy Ring Manager update. Within the update, they discovered code which hinted that the Galaxy Ring could double as a controller for Android XR devices. You might wonder, why not specifically the Galaxy XR? Why Android XR?
Because according to the code, it mentions “Ring gesture for glasses.” As you know, the Galaxy XR is more of a headset rather than glasses. So, this suggests that future Android XR-based smart glasses could use the ring as a controller. In fact, Samsung confirmed that it has future devices in the works as part of a collaboration between companies like Google, Warby Parker, and Gentle Monster.
The latter two companies, for those unfamiliar, specialize in glasses. So, it stands to reason that future Samsung Android XR devices could come in the form of smart glasses.
To a certain extent, this potential feature doesn’t come as a surprise. As it stands, the Galaxy Ring can do more than just track your health. It can be used to control your phone to a certain degree, like helping you take photos and silencing alarms. So, using it to control future wearables doesn’t seem like a huge stretch of the imagination.
Was Samsung laying the foundation?
Samsung has been making wearables like smartwatches for years. However, it caught many by surprise when the company decided to jump into making smart rings. That particular segment of the market was dominated by Oura, and in all honesty, hasn’t exactly been gaining the same traction compared to smartwatches or fitness trackers.
So, Samsung’s decision to wade into the market was a little surprising. However, based on these new findings, maybe it shouldn’t have been too surprising. If Samsung can tie its Galaxy Ring with future wearables, it could become a must-have accessory. This would be similar to how Apple’s AirPods have nearly become a must-have accessory for the iPhone, or how the Apple Pencil and the iPad are so synergistic.
