OnePlus is currently facing significant controversy. Users reported that the company’s OnePlus AI features, such as the AI Writer assistant, appeared to be politically censoring content, particularly topics sensitive to the Chinese government. Now, OnePlus is addressing the situation by stating that the issues related to “Chinese political censorship” in the OnePlus AI are due to “technical inconsistencies,” leading the company to temporarily disable the AI Writer feature across all its devices.
The problems came to light just this week. Some users found that the OnePlus AI features would abruptly refuse to generate output when prompted with certain political terms. For instance, attempts to use the AI to discuss the Dalai Lama, mention Taiwan in a neutral context, or reference Arunachal Pradesh as part of India often resulted in the service crashing or immediately blocking the attempted output. Outside of these specific topics, the AI features reportedly functioned as expected.
OnePlus blames ‘Technical Bug’ for blocking political prompts on OnePlus AI
A member of the OnePlus software team initially responded to the controversy. They acknowledged the user reports regarding the AI Writer in the Notes app. The team explained that their AI system uses a hybrid architecture that integrates capabilities from “third-party large models from global partners.”
These posts suggest that the origin of the blocks would be in an external party underlying AI model. It could potentially include geopolitical restrictions built into the model’s training or filtering layer. The company did not mention specific LLMs that could be causing the problem. However, in the past, the Chinese AI DeepSeek received criticism for implementing similar censorship.
AI Writer temporarily disabled
The team also said that the issue requires “more time to address” than initially anticipated. So, OnePlus is temporarily disabling the AI Writer feature. It’s noteworthy that the post mentioned turning off the tool specifically in the OnePlus Notes app. However, users reported that the AI Writer stopped working across virtually all social media apps. The list includes WhatsApp, Instagram, Google, Gmail, and even OnePlus Community.
OnePlus described any “unexpected behavior” as unintentional. They also reaffirm their commitment to “delivering Community-first technology.” Users are now waiting for the company to provide a more detailed explanation and a fix that ensures neutrality across OnePlus’s AI offerings.
