Samsung wants to change how it names its top-tier folding phones this summer. For months, tech fans expected a shorter, wider model to launch under the nickname “Wide.” However, a new leak claims the company chose a completely different path for its 2026 lineup, introducing a new tier system to separate its premium devices. More specifically, Samsung’s next-gen line of foldable phones could include the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, the standard Galaxy Z Fold 8, and the clamshell Galaxy Z Flip 8.
Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra to succeed Fold 7, no “Wide” name model
The real twist is how Samsung is handing out these names. The high-end Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra will actually replace last year’s Galaxy Z Fold 7, SamMobile reports. Meanwhile, the standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 name goes to the wider design we previously saw in leaks as the “Fold 8 Wide.” This wider screen shape makes the phone look more like a normal device when closed, but it comes with a catch. To make room for the new shape, the standard Fold 8 will drop one of its rear cameras, a move similar to what we saw with the Galaxy S25 Edge.
Does it deserve the Ultra badge?
While separating the lineup makes sense, using the “Ultra” name on a foldable is already causing some debate. Well-known tech insider Ice Universe pointed out that the upcoming premium foldable skips key features that define the regular Ultra phones, like a built-in S Pen stylus or the unique Privacy Display.
The phone does bring some great upgrades over the older Fold 7. The list includes a bigger 5,000mAh battery, a 50MP ultrawide camera, and faster 45W wired charging. But while 45W charging is a nice jump from the old 25W limit, it still sits in the shadow of the Galaxy S26 Ultra’s 60W speed. Tipsters also note that the main screen crease won’t show massive improvements this year.
If you were hoping for a cheaper option, the latest data brings some bad news. The complete lack of regulatory filings or test server activity confirms that a budget-friendly Fan Edition (FE) model is not on the map for 2026.
Galaxy Unpacked 2026 date: July launch expected
Instead, Samsung is putting all its chips on this premium trio. Market indicators suggest that the company will unveil the new hardware during an Unpacked event on July 22, 2026 in London. You might want to start saving up early, though, as internal whispers suggest Samsung will raise prices across the whole folding family, following the price hikes of the Galaxy S26 series.
