McLaren has used Miami Art Week to unveil Project Chromology by MSO. It’s a bespoke 750S Spider, which was created as part of a collab with British artist Nat Bowen.
While the name might not ring a bell, she’s an abstract artist known for “vibrant resin-based artworks and the study of chromology.” Given this, she teamed up with McLaren to create a layered paint technique that “translates the signature characteristics” of her art to an automotive finish.
Review: The McLaren 750S Is An Evolution That Sparks A Revolution
The resulting design is known as the Chromatic Layered Finish and it’s certainly eye-catching as multiple translucent coats allow light to “reveal shifting depth and tonal movement.” More interestingly, there’s a subtle, raised texture within the paint surface that creates a sense of dimensionality that can be seen and felt.
In the case of the show car, we can see a tri-color exterior with bright green, light blue, and dark blue. The areas where these colors meet have an interesting circular interaction, which exposes new hues and shading.
Besides the unique paint finish, Project Chromology ushers in 24-carat gold-plated badging. To make sure the badges don’t distract from the design, each one features a color-matched background to stay cohesive.
We can also see a stylish interior with black Alcantara seats sporting contrasting golden accents. They’re joined by blue flourishes on the steering wheel as well as carbon fiber trim. A closer inspection also reveals golden accents as well as an awesome McLaren Nat Bowen badge with ‘dripping’ paint.
Unlike the Artura art car, the Project Chromology 750S is going into production for a “select group of MSO clients.” Each one will have a unique paint scheme inspired by Bowen’s themes. Customers will also receive an original artwork created by Bowen, making both a true collector’s item.
