Genesis and Its Magmatic Direction
When it comes to reinvention, Hyundai seems to know when and how to do it properly. One of the brand’s major moves has been beefing up its performance capabilities and street cred. The now-renowned N division birthed the much-lauded and highly influential Ioniq 5 N, one of the first purpose-built performance EVs.
More recently, the Hyundai Group set its sights on adding some heat to its luxury division through the Genesis GV60 Magma, and it seems it isn’t stopping there.

Magma For All
During a media session at Circuit Paul Ricard, Luc Donckerwolke, Hyundai Motor Group’s president and chief creative officer, announced that all Genesis models will have a Magma variant, the Korean Car Blog reports. Obviously, that won’t be in one go, as Donckerwolke confirmed that these Magma models will redefine the Genesis brand as it enters its second decade.
So, yes, the Magma treatment will not be reserved only for a few halo models but will be rolled out across the whole line. This means that all EVs, sports cars, and crossovers/SUVs are set to have a Magma variant. All of this comes off the back of Genesis’ desire to compete with the likes of BMW M, AMG Mercedes, and Audi RS.
Of note, Magma differentiates itself from N by being more focused on Luxury High Performance, with key ingredients such as electrified technology, design, and motorsports experience.
The Magma strategy is Genesis’s way of broadening its appeal to global markets and making inroads into segments traditionally dominated by European markets.

Which Models Will Get Magma-fied First
Embodying Magma’s philosophy, the GV60 Magma comes in a striking orange hue. Performance comes in the form of electric power, pushing out 601 horsepower and 546 lb-ft from its dual-motor setup, rising to 641 hp and 583 lb-ft with Boost Mode engaged.
Apart from the GV60 Magma, Genesis also introduced the Magma GT Concept, which will be positioned as a mid-engine supercar – if it were to hit production.
Even better, it’s evident that Magma-fication is fully underway, with a slightly camouflaged but orange GV90 being spotted a few weeks ago. The GV90 will soon be the brand’s Halo full-sized SUV, and is ripe for the Magma treatment. A facelifted G80 Magma prototype was also spotted recently.
