Google has reportedly agreed to a settlement over the Play Store lawsuit brought against the company, which could end up resulting in some Google Play Store users getting money from the settlement. If you’re unfamiliar with the case, that’s understandable, as it’s one of many cases that Google has been involved in over the past several years.
This one in particular was brought forth by New York Attorney General Letitia James and 53 other Attorneys General. James and other parties secured the settlement in 2023. This week, James has started to inform New Yorkers of how they might be able to claim any money they may be owed as part of this settlement. You don’t have to be a resident of New York, however, to be eligible for any restitution. When the lawsuit was brought forth, James and other Attorneys General claimed Google was monopolizing app distribution, leading to customers paying more money for apps and in-app purchases. Google denies these claims but has agreed to the settlement.
Google’s Play Store lawsuit settlement applies to all of the US
As ZDNet reports, this settlement applies to residents of the US in its entirety. This includes all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. Which means there’s potential for a lot of people to receive money. That being said, how much people get will depend on a few factors. Mainly, how many people actually end up being eligible to receive the money is what will dictate the amount.
To be eligible, all you had to do was make a purchase on the Play Store between 2016 and 2023. You also need to be a US resident in the above-mentioned locations. Those impacted don’t have to file a claim either. Money will automatically be deposited into a PayPal or Venmo account associated with the same account that was linked to the Google Play Store.
There is also a supplemental claims process. This is for people who don’t have either of those types of accounts or the same phone number that was tied to the Google Play account during the period mentioned. It’s reported that each user who made a purchase on the Play Store will get at least $2 of the $700 million settlement. So, any money received might not be a lot. These amounts could vary, though, so you’ll want to keep an eye out for more details.
This is all dependent on the settlement being approved as well. The settlement will be placed before a judge as part of a fairness hearing at the end of April next year.
