Google was reportedly testing deadline functionality in the Tasks app a couple of months ago. This was long overdue, considering the nature of the app. Although we usually appreciate the minimalist design of the app, the lack of this feature was still important. Well, that is changing now. The deadline feature is rolling out to Google Tasks for Android. However, it is not entirely good news, as there appears to be a limitation.
Google Tasks only lets you set a deadline date for your tasks
Currently, as noted by Android Police’s Artem Russakovskii, Google Tasks doesn’t allow you to set a due time (only date). This is a very significant limitation in managing your tasks more effectively. Google is now rolling out this feature to users on the Android platform.
Android Authority also reports seeing similar behavior. Google Tasks lets you set a notification time for each task, but setting a deadline time would’ve made things even better.
The rollout of the feature appears to be limited
It would have been ideal to receive a notification a few hours before the deadline so that you would still have time to complete the task. Either way, the deadline functionality while creating the task is still a step forward. This makes the app more functional as a productivity tool.
When we first saw the feature in September, you had to go back and edit the task after it had been created to add the deadline. This was an unusual flow for creating tasks. However, that seems to have changed now with the actual rollout. The Google Tasks deadline feature seems to be rolling out in batches at the moment.
