Google is reportedly preparing another useful upgrade for its Messages app. The new addition is aimed at improving communications inside RCS group chats. Some users on Google Messages beta have reported that they are getting a new mentions feature. As you might have understood, the feature lets the user tag individual people in a group conversation.
Google Messages will soon get the @mention feature
A few users of Google Messages beta have begun seeing a prompt that explains that they can now use the “@” symbol to directly tag any person in the group chat. The feature works similarly to other messaging apps such as WhatsApp and Telegram. Once you type “@,” the app will show a list of contacts from the conversation, letting you tap a name to tag that person.
The display name of the tagged account can be modified beforehand. Once you tag an individual person, they will receive a notification even if they have muted the particular chat. This makes it easier to grab people’s attention and remind them of important texts without messaging personally.
The feature might soon roll out to the stable users
As reported earlier, the feature is available for select beta users only. And on top of that, the mention feature is supported only in RCS chats. The selected rollout suggests that Google is still testing it. Now, since we don’t have any official words about the feature yet, it’s hard to predict a definite rollout timeline. However, Google generally doesn’t take much time to release such features.
In recent months, Google seems to be spending a lot of its time transforming most of its third-party applications. It wants the Messages app to become a modern and flexible platform. The addition of this feature also shows the company’s intention to give RCS a more polished, app-like feel rather than the experience of traditional SMS.
