Google Maps and Tesla have joined hands to deliver live Supercharger availability information directly within the navigation app. This new feature will allow EV drivers, both Tesla and non-Tesla alike, to check the real-time availability of the Supercharger stalls before arriving at the station.
EV drivers can now see real-time availability of Tesla Superchargers on Google Maps
Starting today, once users open Google Maps and view a Tesla Supercharger station, they’ll see an availability “pill” in the location information tab. The tab will show real-time data of the stations, such as the total number of stalls, how many charges are available or are being used, and possibly split by charger speed types. Users may see something like “4/12 stalls available – 250 kW fast chargers.”
The service uses the real-time data from Tesla servers and makes it visible to Google Maps users. The feature is available to all Google Maps users, including Tesla and non-Tesla users. The feature supports Android, iOS, Android Auto, and even Tesla’s in-car display via Google Maps.
The integration aims to widen visibility and avoid surprise congestion
Tesla users can already access the real-time data of the Superchargers in-car or in the Tesla app. However, since the feature is now directly integrated into Google Maps, it should widen visibly across all EV users. It will also avoid surprise congestion, especially for non-Tesla users.
The availability of charging has always been a point of concern for EV users. Arriving at the charging station and finding all the stalls occupied wastes time and adds stress. Thankfully, the new integration of Tesla Supercharger data into Google Maps takes a first attempt to solve the issue. Using this feature, drivers can plan better and avoid stations that are full. It becomes even more useful for long trips where charging breaks are to be planned.
