According to earlier reports, it has been suggested that the iPhone Air is a preview of what we might be able to expect from the 2026 foldable iPhone. Now, based on the latest rumors, it’s starting to feel more true than ever. Analyst Jeff Pu has recently published an investors note where he claims the foldable iPhone could be made out of titanium and aluminum.
Foldable iPhone to use both titanium and aluminum
The investors note seen by 9to5Mac reveals that Pu believes that the foldable iPhone will feature a frame that uses a hybrid of titanium and aluminum. So, why do we say that it feels similar to the iPhone Air? This is because that’s pretty much the same material that Apple used in the construction of the iPhone Air.
Apple has advertised the use of titanium in the iPhone Air. However, teardowns of the phone reveal that it is actually a combination of both materials. Aluminum is still used in the underframe, but titanium is used in the outer frame to lend strength and durability. It’s not surprising Apple didn’t go full titanium.
Titanium is more expensive to work with because it is trickier. Going 100% titanium would have increased the cost of the iPhone Air substantially. At least this way, Apple kind of gets the best of both worlds. Plus, we’ve also seen from bend tests, the iPhone Air holds its own extremely well.
What else do we know?
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard that the iPhone Air could act as a precursor to the foldable iPhone. An earlier Bloomberg report describes the device as resembling “two titanium iPhone Airs side-by-side.”
Other rumors indicate that the phone will feature a 5.5-inch outer display, and a 7.8-inch inner display when unfolded. This is slightly smaller compared to other foldables. However, since this would be a first for Apple, we’re not sure that matters.
Also, we’re hearing that Apple will use Touch ID as the security system of choice. The phone is also rumored to sport four cameras. There will be two on the back of the phone, one on the inside, and one on the front. In any case, many are understandably hyped for Apple’s foldable iPhone.
But some analysts think we should temper our expectations. Jefferies analyst Edison Lee warns that Apple stock price could take a substantial hit if Apple is unable to match the expectations of its customers.
