Exclusive: Official Motorola Edge 70 Ultra Render

The Motorola Edge 50 Ultra is technically the last non-folding flagship that the company announced. It arrived back in May 2024. Motorola opted to skip the Motorola Edge 60 Ultra completely, which brings us to the topic of this article. The Motorola Edge 70 Ultra is coming, and we are here to share with you the phone’s design, though we’ll talk about a lot more things in the article.

We have an exclusive image of the Motorola Edge 70 Ultra to share, which is also the first look at the device. In addition to that, we’ll talk about its rumored specifications, make a comparison with its predecessor, and make some other predictions related to the company’s upcoming flagship smartphone. With that being said, let’s get to it.

Here’s your first look at the Motorola Edge 70 Ultra design

The Motorola Edge 70 Ultra will have a bit different design style than its predecessor, but not by much. If you take a look at the image below this paragraph, you’ll see the phone in two color variants. This is the only image of the device that we have thus far, but ti does share plenty of information as is. The device’s back side is shown, which was the biggest mystery when it comes to the device.

The colors are here, but not their official names

We still don’t know the official names for these two colors, but we’re looking at dark blue and dark olive colors here, pretty much. In fact, the blue color reminds us of dark jeans, it has a pattern on it, which only emphasizes that comparison. The other color comes with the same pattern, and it also looks really nice. We’re still not sure what materials is the company planning on using, but that backplate definitely looks different than what the Motorola Edge 70 offers.

The Motorola Edge 70 was announced at the end of October, and it includes an eco leather backplate. We’re not sure if that’s what Motorola plans on doing, but this does look notably different. It reminds us more of what the all-new POCO F8 Ultra offers, in terms of looks, and that phone has “fiber-reinforced plastic back” which is another name for silicone polymer back. So it’s possible that is what Motorola will use.

It seems like the backplate will be grippy

Regardless, that backplate will offer a lot more grip than glass or metal, that’s for sure. Motorola’s logo is placed at the center of the backplate, and it doesn’t look the same across the two models. Even the logo adapts to different colors, it seems. In the top-left corner, you’ll notice the phone’s camera island. There are three cameras included there, while the fourth circle is reserved for the LED flash. Those cameras do protrude on the back, and they’re placed on top of a square camera island. If we had to guess, we’d say these are main, ultrawide, and periscope telephoto cameras.

You’ll also notice that both the power/lock and volume rocker buttons sit on the right-hand side of the phone. On the left side, there’s an extra physical key, which is meant to be used for AI, but it will likely be customizable… to a degree. The phone’s frame will be made out of metal, most probably aluminum, and it’s black in the case of both of these color options.

A flat display is expected

We don’t get to see the front side of the phone, unfortunately. What we do expect to see is a centered display camera hole at the top of its display. We also expect to see thin, uniform bezels and a flat display this time around. The Motorola Edge 50 Ultra had a curved display, but considering that the Edge 70 switched to a flat one, that’s what we expect to see from the Motorola Edge 70 Ultra as well.

We still don’t have the whole picture when it comes to the Motorola Edge 70 Ultra specs, not even close, but some details did leak out. Let’s kick things off with the brain behind the whole thing, its processor. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 from Qualcomm will fuel the device. Evan Blass, a well-known tipster, confirmed as much, while claiming that Qualcomm itself said it. That is Qualcomm’s newest processor, but not the company’s best one.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 will fuel the device

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 is the company’s best processor. That one will be used by many flagships in 2026. The Motorola Edge 70 Ultra won’t be one of them, it seems. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 is still powerful, but it’s a step below the ‘Elite’. With that being said, the phone is codenamed ‘Urus’, and it also popped up on Geekbench, which revealed some additional details. Before we get to that, do note that the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 5 chip was also rumored, but that one won’t be used.

Speaking of which, the device managed to score 2,636 points in the single-core and 7,475 points in the multi-core test on Geekbench. Those are compelling results, needless to say. They’re not on the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 level, but still… they’re great. That listing also confirmed that a 16GB RAM model of the phone will be on offer. That could be the only model, by the way. Android 16 will come pre-installed on the device, along with Motorola’s additions on top of it.

A large display is expected

A large OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate is expected. That display will likely be flat, and we’re expecting it to measure around 6.7-6.8 inches in size, though that detail did not leak out just yet. The battery information is still under wraps, while the phone will almost certainly include main, ultrawide, and periscope telephoto cameras. Other details regarding the cameras are still unknown.

Let’s talk more about that chip. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 features Qualcomm’s custom Oryon CPU cores and the same architecture as the Elite model. The CPU layouts are similar, but the clock speeds are different. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 is more powerful. Its GPU is inferior, and so is the cache. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 will be inferior in the gaming department, even though we’re expecting great performance still.

When will it launch?

So, when will this phone launch? That’s something we don’t know at this point, but we do expect it to arrive sooner than its predecessor. The Motorola Edge 50 Ultra launched in May 2024, so mid-2024. The Motorola Edge 60 Ultra never arrived, so Motorola basically didn’t have a higher-end slab phone to offer this year. That leads us to believe that the Motorola Edge 70 Ultra will arrive sooner than expected, even though we still don’t have proof of that. The fact that we managed to get our hands on the exclusive image shown in this article at this point could be an indicator, though.

The OnePlus 15R, another phone that will utilize the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, will launch on December 17. If Motorola ends up waiting until mid-2026, that will be kind of too late. The company should push this phone out sooner. The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas could be the ideal opportunity for Motorola, even though that’s probably not going to happen. Motorola could end up waiting until MWC in February, or even longer. We do hope it will arrive sooner than expected, though.

What about the competition?

The Motorola Edge 70 Ultra will have a lot of competition on the market when it arrives. Its predecessor was launched at a $550 price tag, and that’s a price range where a lot of phones are placed. The OnePlus 15R could be its main competitor, though. We do hope that Motorola will be able to keep the same price tag for the Motorola Edge 70 Ultra, or at the very least not bump it up too much. The lower the price, the more compelling the phone will be.

Some of you may see the Google Pixel 9 as a direct competitor to this phone, too, and that’s fair. However, the Pixel 9 is notably more expensive at $799, not counting any discounts that may be floating around. The Samsung Galaxy A56 is another phone that comes to mind, as it’s priced at $500. The Motorola Edge 70 Ultra will be more expensive, but also more powerful at the same time. We really do wonder what price tag Motorola will end up going with.

How will the Motorola Edge 70 Ultra compare to its predecessor?

How will the device compare to its predecessor, the Motorola Edge 50 Ultra? Well, for one thing, it’s expected to have a flat display, not a curved one. Furthermore, the camera island on the new phone will be a bit different, even though it will sit in the same spot. Motorola will also go with a different finish, but the size of the phone should be rather similar. The Motorola Edge 50 Ultra was not all that slippery thanks to the silicone polymer back, well, the wood variant kind of was, but the silicone polymer model was not. We’re expecting that to be the case with the Motorola Edge 70 Ultra as well.

The new model will, of course, be more powerful thanks to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chip. It will also come with the latest version of Android, but the Motorola Edge 50 Ultra also received Android 16. We are expecting an improvement in the camera department, too, even though we don’t know the details yet. Just to be clear, the Motorola Edge 50 Ultra did ship with a very capable main camera, so it will be interesting to see what the successor will do in that regard. Improvements are expected across the board, though.

The battery capacity is a mystery as well at this point, but we’re confident it will be notably bigger than the one in the Motorola Edge 50 Ultra. That phone has a 4,500mAh battery, which is kind of low for today’s standard for phones with 6.7-inch displays. Not many people would complain if the charging stayed the same, though, at 125W wired, 50W wireless, and 10W reverse wireless levels. Many details are still missing when it comes to the Motorola Edge 70 Ultra specs, so we can only guess at this point.

Its price tag will play a huge factor in its popularity

The Motorola Edge 70 Ultra will likely be the company’s most powerful non-folding smartphone in 2026. Well, unless the company decides to trump it with another, more powerful device, which is not that likely. This smartphone, with the right price tag, could end up being quite powerful. Based on what we’ve seen thus far, it’ll have plenty to offer, and not many people will complain about the fact that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 is used instead of the ‘Elite’ version. Its price will be an extremely important factor, though.
