Getting a local SIM card when you land in a new country has always been kind of a pain. You either pay a lot for international roaming or spend the first hour of your trip hunting for a SIM kiosk at the airport. AT&T wants to fix that for anyone heading to North America this summer, with AT&T eSIM visitors now able to skip the physical SIM entirely.
AT&T launches new eSIM for visitors
The carrier just launched eSIM by AT&T, a short-term data plan built for international visitors arriving in the US, Mexico, and Canada. Signing up and setting it up is pretty simple and straightforward. You download the AT&T Connect on Demand app, pick your plan, and activate it directly from your phone.
This means there’s no physical SIM required, saving you the hassle of swapping it in and out. According to AT&T, there are a bunch of different plans to choose from. This includes plans good for 1 day, 7 days, 15 days, or 30 days. The US single-day pass starts at $3.99. A 30-day North America pass tops out at $59.99, taxes and fees included. All plans include unlimited data and 5GB of hotspot access. Unlimited talk and text is listed as coming soon but isn’t included yet.
There’s also a feature called Turbo Live, which bumps your data priority in crowded venues like soccer stadiums. It keeps streaming and rideshare apps running when thousands of people are on the same network.
What else do you need?
To use AT&T eSIM visitor plans, you’ll need an unlocked dual-SIM 5G phone and an international phone number. For the most part, a lot of smartphones these days support dual SIM and eSIM. However, you should still check just to be safe.
AT&T’s timing is also interesting, but it makes sense. The FIFA World Cup is kicking off June 11 across the US, Mexico, and Canada. This means that AT&T is clearly targeting the wave of international soccer fans arriving next month. AT&T is also not alone in launching plans aimed at visitors.
Just recently, T-Mobile launched a similar prepaid eSIM offering with plans starting at $25 for seven days. T-Mobile includes unlimited talk and text from day one. AT&T doesn’t match that yet. However, AT&T has the added benefit of flexibility. Its $3.99 one-day pass is something T-Mobile doesn’t offer, making it the better pick for short stays or quick stopovers.
