It seems like Chinese smartphone manufacturers are stepping away from ultra-thin phones, and Apple is to thank for that. What’s happening? Well, the iPhone Air sales have been so bad that various companies decided to ditch their plans for ultra-thin phones.
A number of smartphone manufacturers have ditched their ultra-thin phone plans
The information comes from DigitTimes, which says that brands including Xiaomi, OPPO, and Vivo have cancelled their plans to launch ultra-thin phones. They were all planning to release competitors to the iPhone Air, but that will not be the case, it seems.
Apple’s key suppliers, Foxconn and Luxshare, have made certain steps that indicate the iPhone Air sales are very poor. Foxconn has reduced its iPhone production lines, while Luxshare has completely halted production.
It is also worth noting that the iPhone Air’s designer has left the company recently, though that could be completely unrelated to the sales. Another report said that the iPhone Air 2 has been delayed.
With that being said, Apple made a really solid smartphone with the iPhone Air. The thing is, the battery life is nowhere close to the Apple iPhone 17, and users are also getting only one camera on the back.
To most people, the extra thinness is not worth the tradeoff
The extra thinness the phone provides is not worth the sacrifice to the vast majority of people, that much is obvious. It’s also not surprising. The iPhone Air may be extremely thin, but the regular iPhone 17 is plenty thin as well.
In fact, regular smartphones these days are plenty thin in general. So the need for these ultra-thin smartphones is really not there. Yes, it has its benefits if you’re using a case, of course, but the tradeoffs are usually quite considerable.
Chinese OEMs could make the battery life issue go away in such phones, thanks to silicon-carbon batteries, but it seems like they lost interest.
