The Xbox 360 was a special time for gamers, as well as the launch team for the console, and now gamers are getting a peek at what launch team members were given as a thank you for all their hard work getting the Xbox 360 to its launch period. If you grew up in the Xbox 360 era, then you’re likely familiar with Larry Hryb, otherwise known as Xbox’s Major Nelson. Hryb was often the face of the Xbox 360 and Xbox One in videos online and dealt with the community in posts on social media. He now works as the Director for Community at Unity, but he was a “major” part of Xbox for 23 years, so it seems only fitting that he would share something special for the 20th Anniversary of the second Xbox console.
The Xbox 360 launch team members all got a special console with their gamertag
The Xbox 360 era was a neat time to be a gamer. Not only did the console have a bunch of innovative features, but it was also a cool-looking console that had some fun customization options. For instance, Xbox offered faceplates for it that you could swap out. The launch team 05 console as it’s referred to, has one of these unique faceplates, but it looks like the artwork on it was made custom for the team. Hryb shared images of his launch team console on X.
In addition to the custom faceplate, there’s also a custom engraving of Hryb’s gamertag, Major Nelson, on the top of the hard drive. On consumer versions of the console, the engraving was of the hard drive storage amount. While the console probably doesn’t function any differently from a regular model, it does have a special custom design that sets it apart. Hryb also notes that he’s never powered this console on. So, it’s simply remained a cool decoration piece in his home for the past 20 years.
As Hryb isn’t part of the Xbox team anymore and the Xbox brand in general has taken quite a turn, this is a nice callback to the days when Xbox was on top. These days, Xbox is spending a lot of time pushing games to other platforms and creating a more handheld-friendly UI environment for Windows. It’s also planning on releasing a high-end console/PC hybrid as the next Xbox console.
