A few months ago, we saw the official debut of the GPT-5 model. The initial launch faced some hurdles, although the company quickly released improvements. Now, OpenAI is back with a significant upgrade to its AI model: GPT-5.1. This release addresses both intelligence and, perhaps more significantly, the often-voiced complaint from users that the AI chatbot had become too stiff or “robotic” in its responses.
OpenAI is positioning GPT-5.1 as an upgrade that makes the conversational experience more enjoyable. The model now features a default setting that is distinctly “warmer” and more conversational. This change stems from direct user feedback, where many felt that raw intelligence alone was not enough. Users wanted an AI that was actually pleasant to talk to, and ChatGPT wasn’t often. Well, that seems about to change.

The update splits its focus across the two core models: GPT-5.1 Instant and GPT-5.1 Thinking.
The Instant model is the version most users interact with daily. It now boasts two key improvements besides the warmer tone: it is more intelligent and better at following specific instructions. This addresses one of the most persistent user frustrations, where previous models struggled to adhere to strict formatting or word limits in a prompt.
Then there is the advanced Thinking model, designed for complex reasoning. This one has become more efficient. It now adapts its processing time more precisely to the query. In other words, users spend less time waiting for simple summaries, while the model spends more time thoroughly considering complex problems. This results in quicker overall task completion and clearer explanations.
Personalization takes center stage
Beyond the default tone change, OpenAI is giving users unprecedented control over how ChatGPT communicates. The personality presets have been expanded to include choices like Professional, Candid, and Quirky, alongside the standard options.
This move toward personalization highlights OpenAI’s determination to win back user satisfaction following the mixed reception of the initial GPT-5 launch. That launch faced significant user backlash over incremental performance gains and the temporary removal of beloved legacy models. By rolling out refined personality controls—and even experimenting with granular options like controlling emoji frequency—OpenAI suggests that ChatGPT will become increasingly adaptable. This will allow it to satisfy the preferences and communication style of each user.
The GPT-5.1 update is currently rolling out to paid customers. Free users will follow in the coming days. The previous GPT-5 models will stick around for a few months under a legacy dropdown, giving users ample time to evaluate if the new, friendlier AI is indeed the smarter and less frustrating partner they have been waiting for.
