A young Ferdinand Porsche created the world’s first hybrid-driven automobile in 1901. The Lohner-Porsche ‘Mixte’ combined an internal combustion engine and four in-hub electric motors, providing the Mixte not only with four-wheel traction, but up to 80 hp in later models. It was a genius thing. But it was also the right technology, at the wrong time.
